چکیده

This paper presents a novel region discovery framework geared towards finding scientifically interesting places in spatial datasets. We view region discovery as a clustering problem in which an externally given fitness function has to be maximized. The framework adapts four representative clustering algorithms, exemplifying prototype-based, gridbased, density-based, and agglomerative clustering algorithms, and then we systematically evaluated the four algorithms in a real-world case study. The task is to find feature-based hotspots where extreme densities of deep ice and shallow ice co-locate on Mars. The results reveal that the density-based algorithm outperforms other algorithms inasmuch as it discovers more regions with higher interestingness, the grid-based algorithm can provide acceptable solutions quickly, while the agglomerative clustering algorithm performs best to identify larger regions of arbitrary shape. Moreover, the results indicate that there are only a few regions on Mars where shallow and deep ground ice co-locate, suggesting that they have been deposited at different geological times.

A Unifying Framework for Clustering with Plug-In Fitness Functions and Region Discovery

The goal of spatial data mining [SPH05] is to automate the extraction of interesting and useful patterns that are not explicitly represented in spatial datasets. Of particular interests to scientists are techniques capable of finding scientifically meaningful regions in spatial datasets as they have many immediate applications in medicine, geosciences, and environmental sciences, e.g., identifi...

Regional Association Rule Mining

This project [4] centers on regional association rule mining and scoping in spatial datasets. We introduces a methodology for mining spatial association rules and proposes new algorithms to determine the scope of a spatial association rule. We develop a reward-based region discovery framework that employs clustering to find interesting regions. The framework is applied to solve two distinct reg...

Mining Of Spatial Co-location Pattern from Spatial Datasets

Spatial data mining, or knowledge discovery in spatial database, refers to the extraction of implicit knowledge, spatial relations, or other patterns not explicitly stored in spatial databases. Spatial data mining is the process of discovering interesting characteristics and patterns that may implicitly exist in spatial database. A huge amount of spatial data and newly emerging concept of Spati...

Shape-based Clustering Of Enterprise CAD Databases

Cluster analysis is a primary data mining method for knowledge discovery in spatial databases, where, the goal is to find ‘natural’ groups in a dataset based on a similarity or dissimilarity function for pairs of objects. With the number and size of spatial databases in various domains growing rapidly over the last couple of decades, methods for automated knowledge discovery in these datasets i...

Spatio-temporal variability of aerosol characteristics in Iran using remotely sensed datasets

The present study is the first attempt to examine temporal and spatial characteristics of aerosol properties and classify their modes over Iran. The data used in this study include the records of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and Angstrom Exponent (AE) from MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Aerosol Index (AI) from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), obtained from 2005 t...
